Could the Smoking Ban in the UK Drive Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Web?
A lot has been reported in the press just a while ago regarding the bingo industry struggling as a result of the anti smoking law in Britain. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to help keep the businesses alive. But does the internet version of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or might it never compare to its real life opposite?
Bingo is an age old game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game of late had seen a recent resurgence in acceptance with younger members of society opting to hit the bingo parlors instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the legislating of the anti cigarette law around United Kingdom.
No more will players be permitted to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public place will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favorite places where players like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already prohibited in the bingo halls. Profits have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they haven’t deserted this familiar game?
The answer is on the internet. Gamblers are now realizing that they can enjoy bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a cocktail and cig and in the end, enjoy monstrous prizes. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on on the net is unlikely to replace the social portion of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a group of men and women the law has left many bingo players with no alternative.
