Could the Anti Smoking Law in England Force Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Web?

[ English ]

An abundance has been reported in the papers just a while ago about the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to help keep the businesses afloat. But will the online variation of this quintessential game present a salvation, or might it not compare to its real life opposite?

Bingo is an enduring game historically enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. In any case the game of late had seen a recent increase in popularity with younger men and women deciding to visit the bingo halls instead of the bars on a weekend. All this is about to be destroyed with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over England and Wales.

Players will no longer be allowed to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public areas will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common areas where many people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlours. Profits have dropped and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Of course they haven’t cast aside this enduring game?

The answer is online. Gamblers are now realizing that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a cocktail and smoke and in the end, have a chance at massive jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti cigarette law.

Of course betting on on the web is unlikely to replace the social aspect of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of players the law has left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no choice.
